We're fortunate to have excellent recordings of nearly all Stanford's chamber music....except the quartets save the two recorded by the Vanbrugh. That recording was praised by many, and I'm surprised that Hyperion haven't gone further. Did the Vanbrugh Quartet not want to tackle them? Dibble's book shows very clearly that the quartets were important to Stanford, were performed by quartets such as the Joachim in their day. But now, alas, have sadly dropped into the category of the unperformed.
However I gave a whoop of joy when I read in a recent Stanford society Newsletter that SOMM are hoping to record all eight (plus the two quintets) with the Dante Quartet. I understand that funding for the project is not yet in place, so fingers very tightly crossed in the meantime. It would be wonderful to hear them at last!
