Em Marshall-Luck writes: "The story of Der Kreidekreis (The Chalk Circle) – here re-set to take place in China". I am rather bemused by this use of the word "re-set", as the story/drama is Chinese (Yuan dynasty) and remained as such in Klabund's dramatic version, used by Zemlinsky in writing his libretto. It was Brecht who later reworked the story in his play Der kaukasische Kreidekreis, setting it in Georgia in 1944.
