Thanks for your welcome feedback. First of all, I take your point about comparisons. My intention is not to highlight what I have on my shelves but - with collectors in mind - to indicate at least some familiarity with rival versions.
Ironically I've been pilloried on other forums in the past for not including comparisons, so it seems I can't win :-) In any event, many of the links in this review are not to my own reviews but to others, and were inserted by our esteemed editor.
Recorded sound is a very subjective thing. In the case of the Nielsen symphonies the BIS recordings sound the best to me. And comparing the live and recorded Storgårds performances - a process that took many hours - I was able to hear things in the former that don't always come through in the latter.
I find my Mac/Audiolab/Sennheiser set-up - headphones, not speakers - to be extremely revealing and I usually find it's a reliable guide to a given recording. In this case I have had some corroboration from a musician and journalist whose system is considerably more expensive than mine.
I do agree about these double reviews though, and I much enjoyed GPJ's very thoughtful analysis of this set. As I am not a trained musician I value the insights of those who are.
