I think that most fans of classical music find these comparisons useful for giving a better idea of what the new performance is like. Much more useful than a blow-by-blow description of a piece of music, which whether in a review, concert program or liner notes, is either redundant (if I know the music) or uselessly abstract (if I don't).
One thing I wish more reviewers here would do is provide composer comparisons, or at least some specifics of melody or instrumentation, when writing about obscure music.
