Cyril Rootham from Lyrita
Posted by Colin Mackie on July 5, 2015, 2:55 am
I am sure that there will be others who like me will wish to greet with huge delight the forthcoming release by Lyrita of Cyril Rootham's Symphony No.2 in its BBC broadcast from 1984. This was Rootham's final composition and the dying composer fought to complete the work whilst suffering from progressive muscular atrophy. The orchestration, including that of the work's choral finale, was completed by Rootham's Cambridge colleague and friend Patrick Hadley.
Equally splendid will be the opportunity to have the work with which Lyrita have coupled the symphony: Rootha's large-scale Ode on the Morning of Christ's Nativity, composed for the Three Choirs Festival. The Ode (like the Symphony conducted by Vernon Handley) was broadcast in 1975. Lyrita are issuing these two works on two cds but at a very reasonable cost and lovers of British music will, hopefully, be eager to buy this further treasure from the wonderful Itter Broadcast Collection.
Thank you for taking part in the MusicWeb International Forum.
