From Paul Conway's splendid notes accompanying the Rootham disc (which arrived with me today, so soon after placing my order!) I learned that the Ode on the Morning of Christ's Nativity was in fact written for and won the 1928 Carnegie Competition and premiered in Cambridge in 1930. It was performed at the 1934 Three Choirs Festival in Gloucester but not written for that festival.
