Re: Cyril Rootham from Lyrita
Just received this - what a wonderful release! I found the final pages of Symphony 2, where the music seems to enter a kind of ethereal/spiritual world, with the chorus against a repeating passage on the strings, to be incredibly moving. The Second Symphony is comparatively tranquil compared to the bracing and invigorating First Symphony. I am greatly looking forward to hearing Ode on the Morning of Christ's Nativity. Patrick Hadley certainly repaid Rootham's faith in him (as seen by Rootham's conducting the premiere of Hadley's wonderful 'The Trees so High') by assisting the dying Rootham's in orchestrating the last part of the Second Symphony. Interesting that Rootham's conducted the first English concert performance of Honegger's 'King David'.
