As for the specific case of the Harmonia Mundi CD of Les Noces etc, here’s my position:
Les Noces: I’d like to have the Russian text, but I am prepared to listen to the work as ‘pure’ music without following the words. It’s not like a comic opera with charming repartee and surprising turns of plot.
Mass: No text, no problem
Cantata: For this work no text really is a dealbreaker - or it would be, were it not that I can find the text at the splendid site run by Emily Ezust: http://www.lieder.net/lieder/
So I could buy this CD. Maybe I will. But do I really want to own a CD that makes me curse the name of Harmonia Mundi whenever I take it out of the rack?
