1) The Alban Berg Quartet (I prefer the Teldec recordings to the EMI remake, but both are excellent), and
2) The Takacs Quartet on Hyperion (1 & 3 are paired; 2 is coupled with the Piano Quintet, op. 34, with Stephen Hough.
(Much as I admire Stephen Hough, I found the quintet slightly disappointing. The Artemis version, with Leif Ove Andsnes, is better--it's paired with the Schumann piano quintet, op. 44. That same pairing is also superbly done by the Alexander String Quartet with Joyce Yang on Foghorn Classics, in remarkably warm yet transparent sound.
