To Paul Serotsky and Chris Howell: I happily concede that John France's review was up to par in all other respects, and you may say that the fact that he reached the right conclusion is the important thing. But would you let someone who's never heard of beer guide you on Britain's best pubs? I just think we readers can expect a certain basic minimum knowledge from critics, and that MUST include an idea of who the sector's great/famous players are. My heart sinks when I come to a folksy review that starts with the words "I'd never heard of Weinberg/Clementi/Ries (etc) before..."
I also agree that Gramophone has fallen far!
