It is my opinion that in the case of the Lyrische Suite on record one should start with the first recording made by the Galimir Quartet (consisting at the time of Felix and his three sisters), in 1935/36. Berg is said (by Felix) to have had some part in the coaching of the instrumentalists in the late 20s, and this recording offers valuable insights into phrasing etc. The later recording by Felix and (different) associates was made for Vanguard, issued in 1983: a very fine stereo recording.
I personally doubt that the secret setting was meant for performance. It does nothing for me at all (I've heard it once), and I certainly do not want to hear it sung by the egregious Ms. Fleming (chacun à son goût), though I bow of course to Mr. Barber's inside knowledge of "the kind of luscious voice which Berg imagined".
