Just a small point of order in Johan Van Veen's review: he describes Wallonia as "the French-speaking part of what is now known as Belgium". This is true in part, but Walloon is even today a widespread language of the region, and certainly in Gossec's time it was Walloon, and to a lesser degree Picard (a more French-like language), that was dominant, until the French thought they would annex the region at the time of the French & Belgian Revolutions.
