Gavril Popov Symphony 2 'Motherland'
Posted by Jeffrey Davis on May 8, 2016, 11:24 am
I have always found this epic wartime work to be a moving and powerful score, albeit being written in a conventional style, without the experimentation of the phantasmagoric Symphony 1 (the only work, in my view, together with Weinberg's Fifth Symphony, able to stand alongside Shostakovich's 4th Symphony).
Therefore I was disappointed to read Nick Barnard's almost exclusively negative review of Popov's second symphony on musicweb. It may be written in a conventional idiom and contain overtly propagandist features but it conveys a depth of feeling, especially in its slow movement which I find deeply moving.
