Michael Wilkinson's review of Xia Guan on Naxos confuses me, for two reasons: one, the music on his recording must be different from that on mine, because I found it interesting and beautiful from start to finish; and two, because he describes it as 'bland' in the final sentence, having previously referred to 'lovely sounds, beautifully realised', 'attractive', "very amiable, pretty even".
Also, as an ethnic Chinese, I find some of his references ("conventional patriotic stuff, with rather conventional heroism"; "almost no sign of a distinctively Chinese voice") verging on offensive.
Thank you for taking part in the MusicWeb International Forum.
