Re Rob Barnett's review of the Kancheli 2-CD set conducted by Kakhidze, I've collected most of Kakhidze's recordings of Kancheli. He recorded two partial cycles, with the Georgia and Tbilisi orchestras. Although he has the prestige of being the prime interpreter, I must confess I find Kakhidze's performances dreary. There aren't a lot of alternatives, but I prefer Jurowski in the 7th, and the disc recorded by DePreist. This is not just a matter of better sound; I've collected the recordings of Terterian's 3rd, and found Kakhidze definitely at the rear of the pack interpretively. Dull, unimaginative, plodding. I hope listeners will consider the alternatives before plumbing for this set which is admittedly of historical importance.
