Cheers for all the replies (shame Rob B himself didn't respond). I think you missed my point - I'm all for making such comparisons, but by any stretch Bernard van Dieren is an obscure composer that most listeners are unlikely to have heard anything by. And you can't say, well listen to something on Spotify, because any given piece may not be typical and therefore leave you none the wiser. Surely the point is to use points of reference that will help the reader get an idea of what the composer sounds like - familiar names to all (or at least many). I don't want to have to go and buy another CD to hear a composer who, in Rob Barnett's mind, sounds like one I'm reading a review about! I mean, you wouldn't describe someone to a friend as looking like someone you're friend had never met, would you? You'd say he looks like Gandhi or Einstein or Tony Blair etc.
