For me, the practical problem is that if I only want to listen to the "feature" work on a disc, I must be poised to press Stop in order to prevent the mood being spoiled. This is particularly the case with large works that end quietly, e.g. most of Vaughan Williams' symphonies. Following the 6th symphony with anything at all is surely a terrible lapse of taste.
Another memorable example was the EMI release of Mahler 3 conducted by Rattle; the finale succeeds in creating a poignant etherial beauty - which is then squashed by the rollicking timpanis of "Der Schildwache Nachtlied". A fine recording in the wrong place.
