Sir Lennox Berkeley's Stabat Mater
Posted by Colin Mackie on July 7, 2016, 2:41 am
John Quinn reviews the new recording of Sir Lennox Berkeley's Stabat Mater today (Thursday 7 June). He and other readers will welcome the news that in September Lyrita will be issuing a recording of the work broadcast on 1 March 1965. Mary Thomas, Barbara Elsy, Maureen Lehane, Nigel Rogers, Christopher Keyte and Michael Rippon were the soloists and the instrumental ensemble came from the English Chamber Orchestra. The performance was conducted by Norman Del Mar. The disc also will contain Berkeley's substantial Magnificat in its premiere performance from 1968 and the small scale Cantata "Batter My Heart Three Person'd God"(1962).
In 1978 the composer's son Michael made a version of the Stabat Mater for string orchestra but this has never been recorded.
