I appreciate your note for its additional information about this shadowy Schubert fragment. There seem to have been at least three efforts to complete D. 103. This most recent venture is by Christian Starke. In his notes to the Diogenes Quartet’s recording, Starke explains his sympathy for the theory that Schubert lost interest in the work before finishing it. His reasoning seems plausible, and is as persuasive as Ussi. Unless someone discovers a lost manuscript or set of parts, we may never know whether Schubert gave up on this quartet, or whether we have simply lost the music.
