In regard to Schubert leaving works incomplete, it has been argued by Badura-Skoda and Tirimo (among others) that it was his frequent habit to leave sonata movements without a recapitulation until performance or publication required a completed work. In this way they justify including a number of posthumously completed piano sonatas in their complete surveys. We can't know for sure if they're right, but having more Schubert available to listen to is surely always a good thing.
