Khachaturian's Symphony 3
Posted by Jeffrey Davis on October 20, 2016, 10:39 am
In his interesting and enjoyable review of the fine new CPO recording of Khachaturian's Symphony 2 'The Bell' Michael Wilkinson describes the much derided Symphony 3 as 'dreadful'. Many share this view but I am not one of them and have always enjoyed this noisy score with its brass fanfares and mad organ solo. I listen to it regularly with considerable enjoyment and much prefer it, for example, to any work by Richard Strauss. I agree with Michael, however, on the qualities of the very fine recording and performance of the new Symphony 2. I wish that RCA or someone else would issue Tjeknavorian's recording of Symphony 1 with the LSO, which is much better than his later version on ASV. Symphony 1, a graduation work, is an immensely rewarding score which deserves more attention.
