So what happened to all the music? I left a phone message with Robert last night (we now live 6000 miles apart) and he called this morning to confirm what I suspected. As far as he knows, everything from the house was deposited in the Royal College of Music Library by another Brent Smith relative after Christina Kemp died, so it is to be hoped that the whole collection was thus safeguarded and is now available at the RCM for inspection. Clearly someone with the time, proximity and commitment could perform a valuable service by taking a proper inventory of this archive.
Going back to Nick Barnard’s original query, Robert Tucker is pretty sure there is a string quartet amongst the considerable quantity of chamber music (he also remembers three clarinet quintets, a cello sonata, and a bassoon sonata besides the quartet and quintet that Rob Barnett mentions). Some years ago Robert organised a private performance of the bassoon sonata, and kept a recording of it. He would be very happy to talk or answer as far as he can further questions about Brent Smith, so if anyone would like to get in touch with him, email me and I will pass on his email address and phone number.
