Allow me to take mild and amiable issue with a statement in my colleague Jim Westhead's otherwise fine review of the "Mefistofele" DVD, published today, in which he maintains that, "It is probably fair to say that this opera is no great Italian masterpiece, and for many the closing chorus will be the piece of the opera that is recognisable. Overall, it is short of truly memorable arias..."
While I grant that the work as a whole is uneven, many of its arias have been recorded by the greatest voices - Caruso, Chaliapin, Muzio, Pavarotti, Tebaldi, Callas, Del Monaco and on and on - and indeed they are surely very melodic and recognisable - at least, they are to an opera buff like me.
Thank you for taking part in the MusicWeb International Forum.
