Well at this rate, if we start to amalgamate all our favourite bits - the opening and closing choruses, the half a dozen famous arias Martin and I cite - we are going to get closer to endorsing the idea that the opera has more going for it than just the beginning, no?
I'm not trying to be a smart-alec - it's just that I really do like the work and think it's unfairly disregarded in some quarters, rather like works similarly disparaged ("La gioconda", "Andrea Chénier" and "La rondine" come first to mind.)
