I note that no-one has seen fit to respond to Geoff Diggines' post regarding yet another Rattle disappointment and wonder if that signals polite demurral, general agreement or mere indifference. I have to say that in my acquaintance, Sir Simon's tenure with the BPO is generally regarded as a failure, whereby the orchestra's unique sound has been further degraded and a stream of dull recordings have been issued which evince little distinction in core Austro-German repertoire; look to such as Thielemann for that. Nor is his return to take the helm at the LSO viewed with any enthusiasm. The dynamic and innovative Wunderkind of yesteryear whom I remember in charge at Birmingham has been supplanted by a fussy, exhibitionist style conductor of no special gift. Of course others will disagree and rush to his defence but all I can say is that have bought or retained on my shelves virtually nothing by him from the last quarter century.
