“Perfection's spirit, Goddesse of the minde/passed through hope, desire, griefe and feare” (my edition includes the apostrophe): Gary Higginson asks "what does it mean" in his interesting review, so I will attempt a brief answer: In his "sonnet" sequence Caelica Greville has passed through the above-cited stages of the feverishly adoring lover to finally understand Love in a Dantean way as the great spiritual power which informs the universe, leading us to will only the Good and transcend the sinful symptoms of our all-too-human earthly lusts.
