Re: Bernstein's Jeremiah Symphony
Its a tiny thing - but crucial to the 'weight' of the work I think - the singer is a mezzo. Interesting that Bernstein wrote in that vocal range - a soprano might have had a more brilliant sound but somehow the use of a mezzo gives the work more emotional heft.
I still struggle with "Age of Anxiety" in any version - one of those works where I find Bernstein tries too hard to be intellectual - the compositional technique all a bit hard worked.
