Re: First night of the Proms
What gets my goat is people coming out with these sycophantic hyperboles when, for what they are and the job they're doing, they couldn't possibly say the opposite, if they actually thought it. KD is not a critic and was not there in the role of a critic and if she had said something like "Well, frankly, I found that disappointing, it didn't engage me at all and the audience seem pretty tepid too", she would have been sacked on the spot, yet what credence are we give to high praise from people who would not be allowed to say the opposite. Better go back to the Richard Baker suavities of yore - "very full hall tonight on this sweltering July evening ... audience in shirtsleeves ... soloist returning for third time ... acknowledging applause with the conductor ... not only the Prommers are on their feet now ...".
I should say this is a theoretical comment only, I didn't hear or see the broadcast.
