Re: George Lloyd and Peter Racine Fricker from Lyrita
What an interesting discussion. For a while I was in contact with Caractacus Downes at Lyrita trying to encourage them to issue Bax's 3rd Symphony (RCA LP) with the LSO and Edward Downes. I know, as Len will recall, that I've gone on about this for decades with nothing ever happening. In all this time I didn't twig that Caractacus was the son of the conductor! I will be very interested to hear what Sir Edward makes of those George Lloyd symphonies. I think that No.7 together with No.4, is the best. I'd also be very interested to see a release of Robin Orr's Second on Third Symphony. Symphony No.1 (EMI, with Fricker Symphony 2 and Simpson Symphony 1) was a knock-out as far as I'm concerned. In fact that whole CD was brilliant. The last part of Fricker's Second Symphony is one of the most exciting and engaging sections that I know. For me a great gap in the catalogue is Ruth Gipps's 4th Symphony - her masterpiece I believe.
