Sterndale Bennett Sonata op.13
Posted by Chris Howell on August 17, 2017, 7:07 am
In his review today, Rob Barnett notes that Sterndale Bennett's op. 13 Sonata has been recorded at least once before. The previous recording he mentions is by Simon Callaghan. I make the count at least three times before. The first (or was it?) was a British Music Society cassette on which Alexander Kelly played both Bennett Sonatas plus the Suite de Pieces. The Sonata was also included in volume two of Ilona Prunyi's 3-CD survey (containing about half Bennett's piano output) for Marco Polo (maybe transferred to Naxos, I'm not sure about this).
It is a little surprising BMS never transferred the Kelly cassette to CD. It would make a fine tribute to a fine pianist who ought to have recorded more, a great teacher and a wonderful personality. And also a considerable poet. The Suite de Pieces has actually been put on youtube, but not the Sonatas
