Re: Rostropovich Tchaikovsky symphony cycle

Martin - this has always been one of my favourite Tchaikovsky cycles. Memory serves that it was recorded over a very brief period of time in tandem with the same artists performing the cycle in concert. Additionally, it was just about the first thing Rostropovitch did in the recording studio as a conductor. Adding to the perfect storm of excellence - it is a late recording using the Kingsway Hall and is in excellent EMI/analogue sound. The great horn player Nicholas Busch (he who played the horn solos for Barbirolli in the classic Mahler 5) listed these as amongst the finest recordings of his entire and very illustrious career.
This set has very recently been re-released by Warner and with the additon of Romeo & Juliet and Francesca da Rimini is a superb bargain.
