Re: Rostropovich Tchaikovsky symphony cycle
Martin - I meant to mention it before. Listen carefully for the timpani playing in this set - it is extraordinary. Tchaikovsky's timp writing is rarely that unusual for its time - but the player here (Alan Cumberland perhaps??) plays chromatic bass lines pretty much throughout - doubling string and brass bass lines. I do sometimes wonder how this got past Rostropovitch and the producer since it is completely different from anything the composer wrote . But I'm actually rather glad its there.
