It sits bang in the middle of some of Bax's finest music - certainly not from the period where he started going into creative decline. Lewis Foreman writes that it was written quickly and of course for Harriet Cohen - but by the late 20's Bax's relationship was nothing like as intense either personally or artistically with Cohen as it had been 15 years before. Generally Foreman is also somewhat equivocal about this score.
One curio about this performance - Foreman notes that McCabe played the cut version of the score sanctioned by Cohen after Bax's death. Also, in mentioning that he refers to McCabe's 1978 performance not 1975. My memory put this recording later than 1975 I must admit - I recall getting an off-air to cassette recording made in 1978/79 (I'm dating that from remembering what year I was in at school!) but perhaps it had been in the BBC vaults for a few years before the 25th anniversary broadcasts(?)
I think today I will re-visit Ashley Was' (complete) version on Naxos and try again!
