BUT Solti's "hits" are far greater than his "misses" I feel - and in a wider range of repertoire too. The 'hard-driven' epithet that is universally applied has become its own cliche as far as Solti is concerned. Again - as with all cliches - there is truth to be found. But it is not the only facet of his work and also not as common as the broad-brush critique would imply. My feeling is that this has become an easy comment to trot out to show erudition and insight and - I suspect - is often applied to recordings the critic in question might well not have heard......
