Steve Arloff - Pouishnoff review
Posted by Martin Walker on March 13, 2018, 1:03 pm
I read this review with great interest - it inspired me to play the Afanassiev version of D.894's first movement, taking 23:17 - it kept my attention all the time by its hypnotic control of tone, especially the grumblings in the lower register, which here sound like subtly regulated drones. I think his performance of the whole thing comes out at 49 minutes +. I haven't re-listened to the rest for a long time, but the 1st mvmt certainly surpassed my memory of the Richter, which I recall as being rather too monolithic/granitic, with less tonal finesse than I wanted.
Thank you for taking part in the MusicWeb International Forum.
