Moore Verdi Requiem please !
Posted by Lee Denham on May 25, 2018, 7:24 pm
It was good to be reminded of Ralph Moore's most excellent survey of the Verdi Requiem (see: www.musicweb-international.com/classrev/2017/Oct/Verdi_requiem_survey.pdf ) in his review of the recent reissue of the 1929 Sabajno recording on Pristine Audio (Friday 18th May). That survey, limited to those recordings made from the stereo era onwards, drew conclusions and a recommended shortlist remarkably similar to my own - well, I haven't heard the Barbirolli and think the Mehta a bit "ordinary", so would instead substitute Celibidache's astonishingly unique version (Verdi's Requiem as seen through the prism of Fauré's) and Markevitch's equally unique Moscow recordings of the piece (either live or studio - although they may have been disqualified as they might be "mono"). So as I read Mr Moore's conclusions on the Sabajno and noted they were pretty much the same as my own once again, may I put in a request here for a Prequel to the survey ?! Mono ones only please, Mr Moore !!
