Re: The Decca Mefistofele with Giuseppe Di Stefano
Obviously Chris Howell and I posted on the same day within a couple of hours of each other with similar questions about this recording. Del Monaco might have tried to pull rank with Decca but at that time Stefano was equally adamant that he should be billed as "the greatest tenor in the world" - I seem to remember reading somewhere that he threw a strop when another tenor - presumably Del Monaco - was described as that elsewhere - so maybe there was some kind of status struggle. Or maybe all three possible reasons are true in combination: Di Stefano fell ill, Del Monaco pulled rank and Decca decided that Di Stefano was a less attractive prospect. I suspect that we shall never know - but it's great to have both accounts and I enjoy them equally.
