But the opening of Rubbra's Symphony No.4 is in a different league. It unfolds with such a sense of sublime, measured gravity, almost unwordly but with an inevitability of purpose that speaks volumes for the composer's sincerity and sheer courage in his self-confidence. Rubbra seems to be writing this music as if to say-"I don't know whether you have the patience to stay the course with me but this is the music I MUST write because it represents me as a composer".
It has been said many times before but it is one of the most inspired and magical opening sequence in all British Music.
