Bravo to Ralph Moore for yet another fascinating journey, this time through the various recordings of Der Rosenkavalier (see: http://www.musicweb-international.com/classrev/2018/Aug/Strauss_Rosenkavalier_survey.pdf
). I've no idea how he does it, not least since I've yet to read the La Gioconda and Figaro articles ! That said, it's sobering to look back at the embarrassment of riches that once prevailed the recording industry, especially of standard repertoire, where new recordings of operas in particular tumbled into the shops on a regular basis, when compared to more recent, parsimonious times. Der Rosenkavalier isn't my opera - I prefer my woman to dance in blood, kiss severed heads, or at least have no shadow - but I will concede it does have some very special moments and can pay no higher compliment to Mr Moore, than to say his writings had me reaching once again for my recordings of Der Rosenkavalier for this evening's listening. Many thanks and bravo !
