I agree with you re Klemperer's Beethoven. I find the 'New Wave' so-called 'Original' bandleaders more than underwhelming. For example, J.E Gardiner's much lauded Beethoven Missa Solemnis. The opening under Klemperer is a desperate plea for Mercy, Kyrie Eleison. Under Gardiner it sounds like sheep bleating. And as for Sir Roger Norrington - I think I must be developing an aversion to any knighted gents who conduct, Solti, Rattle, Norrington, Marriner etc etc with the exception of Colin Davis - he tried to turn everything Beethoven wrote into Rossini. Ah well, that's his schtick, I suppose...
