Re: Last place among over 200 Bruckner 4ths?
Many reviewers have called Klemperer's interpretations "matter-of-fact." The late conductor himself would have probably agreed. He contrasted his viewpoint with Bruno Walter's as "moralist vs. immoralist." To me this means that Klemperer refused to smooth what is coarse. I certainly hear that in his recorded legacy, and while it serves Beethoven quite well, it produces a mixed result in Bruckner.
