Re: You had to be there...
Regarding the question whether recordings/videos can deliver the requisite impact compared with attending live performances, John, my wife and I attended the Royal Ballet simulcast of a superb performance of "Romeo and Juliet" at our local cinema last week, and apart from agreeing on the economy and convenience of walking ten minutes from our front door, we also felt that we had the perfect compromise, insofar as the excellent surround-sound in combination with closer shots permitting us to see just how good the acting was ad well as the dancers' technical and aesthetic abilities, made us feel that we had the best seats at a fraction of the cost.
I don't think the same is true of opera; the miking doesn't convey the impact of a proper voice in a large space.
