Any pre-conceptions of heaviness or dullness are swept away by interpretations imbued with strength, clarity, delicacy and unimpeded momentum, played by an incomparable orchestra at its peak. I can make no apology for preferring these conceptions from a seasoned executant musician to those of our HIP scholars.
Interestingly, the American Record Guide's Mozart 'Overview' named Klemperer, Beecham, Walter, Boehm and Szell as its pre-eminent Mozart conductors, to which I would add Fricsay (for his splendidly classical but not but not period-style performances).
