MWI reviews of Franz Schmidt symphonies
Posted by John Proffitt on November 12, 2020, 10:22 pm
The recent reviews from Stephen Greenbank and Dan Morgan of the new DG set of the Franz Schmidt symphonies are interesting to read and to compare their considerable differences of opinion. As one who has loved the Schmidt symphonies for many decades and who has collected virtually every recording of these masterpieces, I come down on the side of Mr. Greenbank. Paavo Järvi and the HR Symphonie-Orchester have produced the finest integral set of these 4 symphonies, in terms of recording quality, orchestral execution, and - most importantly - Järvi's masterful interpretations.
