Bartók solo violin sonata
Posted by Paul Breslin on January 10, 2021, 6:12 pm
I have three excellent recordings of this piece that I was surprised to see unmentioned by either Jonathan Woolf or Robert Cummings: by Christian Tetzlaff on Virgin Classics, Jennifer Koh, on volume 2 of her "Bach and Beyond" series, and Viktoria Mullova (still available in Decca's complete Bartók box). My first experience of the piece was in the recording by Ivry Gitlis, hair-raising in its intensity if a bit rough and ready from the technical standpoint.
