Schnittke's music puzzles me no end. What is the man DOING? And why? :-) And for the same reason, of course, it fascinates me. When I came across the CD in the review, I wanted to know what reviewers said about it, and I found David McDade's review. To me, this comes very close to the ideal review: it's enlightening; it's subjective and honestly so; it presents a perspective on the music and the composer that's new to me; it puts the music in context, historically and amid the works of other modern composers; it gives an opinion about the quality of the playing and the recording; it makes comparisons with other recordings.
In short, it has everything that, in my opinion, a good review should have. Thank you, David McDade! I say, while the reviewers pick their recordings of the month and of the year, let the visitors of MusicWeb pick their review of the year! :-) I'd like to hear from other visitors about reviews that have particularly helped or impressed them. I'll certainly read them.
Regards, Jaap.
