I have to say that I thoroughly enjoy all the Stanford symphonies and concertos but would put in a special word for No.6, `In honour of the life-work of a great artist: George Frederick Watts’, as something close to a masterpiece ‘if any of them is’! The opening movement is wonderfully exhilarating with a superbly punctual close and the ensuing slow movement surely one of the finest things Stanford ever wrote. The remaining two may not quite maintain the level but the sunset glow of the ending is very fine and moving and the symphony deserves to be heard often – as it would be, one reviewer suggested, if the name Elgar were on the title page!
