Paul Paray

Jonathan Woolf mentions that the availability of Paul Paray’s Detroit recordings ‘has been both inconsistent and patchy’, which is undoubtedly true but there was – may well still be – a 10 CD box from Documents at a give-away price (around £16) that recoupled many of these recordings to provide very full discs – the first, I suspect uniquely, couples the Symphonie Fantastique and the César Franck Symphony at 79’29! All four Schumanns are there plus Chausson and Saint-Saëns, all (I think) of the Debussy and Ravel and a good deal more French music, mostly on the lighter side. The sound, I recall, was never less than adequate and often more than that.
