I read this posting by "RobespierreTwo with interest because I reviewed the Barbirolli Society release in question. http://www.musicweb-international.com/classrev/2016/Aug/Mahler_sy7_SJB1084.htm
I decided that I should enquire of the Society in case I needed to amend my review. The Barbirolli Society tell me that at the time of the original release they received a letter from someone who claimed that George Hurst conducted the Nielsen and not Barbirolli. One of their committee members made enquiries and undertook some research — including speaking to someone who was at the concert. These enquiries led to the conclusion that JB did conduct the whole concert. No evidence could be found that Hurst conducted the Nielsen.
I looked at the very comprehensive list of the conductor's performances in Raymond Holden's book 'Barbirolli. A Chronicle of a Career' and I see that he lists two performances of this huge programme on consecutive evenings - 19 and 20 October 1960. I have both the BBC Legends and Barbirolli Society releases of this Mahler performance and in both cases the date of the performance is given as 20 October. If George Hurst was on the podium during these concerts, is it possible that he conducted the Nielsen on 19 October?
The body of the evidence would seem to indicate that the Nielsen Fifth performance issued by the Barbirolli Society was indeed led by JB. It's worth noting also that Raymond Holden states that JB conducted the Nielsen Fifth on 24 occasions during his career.
