Well, although my reviewing colleague Robert Cummings wasn't as bowled over by this recording as I was, he thought the Third was superior to the Fifth and writes of the first movement, "Rouvalis's tempos throughout this movement fit the music perfectly" - so I guess this is, as usual, a matter of taste.
Hi Mikeh. Happy New Year. I'm playing the Rouvali now: it's too rushed in the 1st movement...I urge you to listen to Sanderling...
Hi Dieter Happy New Year. I can trump your 13, I have 29 - never too many with Sibelius. I am still getting fully to grips with Rouvali but am certain it will be joint number one with the Berglund/BSO. The excellent review uses the word "vivacious" - that pretty well sums Rouvali up. Great Sibelius conducting.
I've read with interest the reviews of the Sibelius recording of symphony 3 by Rouvali. It is one of my favourite works and the recording I keep coming back to is the Berlin Classics Kurt Sanderling, Berlin Symphony recording. I have 13 recordings, plus Spotify and I ITunes access to thousands of others: it's the Sanderling I always turn to. I commend a listen to you all....
